Caythorpe & District WI – November 2011-11-11
We watched spellbound as wood turner Alan Haslem created two exquisite vases within minutes at our November meeting. Having explained the workings of his mini-lathe and turning tools he turned a piece of Yew into a sinuous little vase, smoothing it with very fine sandpaper and then polishing it to bring out the full beauty of the natural patterns in the wood. It felt like silk. He then made a different shaped vase from English Cherry wood. In a competition draw Joan Coppin won the Yew vase and Sue Deavin the Cherry wood.
Alan began his love affair with wood as a pattern maker at Ruston Hornsby in Lincoln when all the patterns for engineering components were made of wood. When pattern making moved into synthetics he took early retirement and took up wood turning and now produces a wide range of attractive and tactile products. There has never been such a rush for the sales table!
Alan expressed surprise that our menfolk hadn’t come along to the demonstration. Thanking him, Sheila Sinnatt joked that had her husband seen him at work on the lathe ‘He would have wanted one!”
President Sue Case had brought along a health and safety leaflet about energy saving bulbs and the dangers from the mercury they contain. The leaflet included an horrific photograph of the effects of mercury poisoning on the foot of a man who accidentally trod on a broken bulb.
On a more cheerful note she reminded everyone of the details for the Christmas lunch on December 8th. The coach that will take us to The Riverside at Farndon, Newark, will pick up at the Waggon & Horses in Caythorpe at 11.15 am, the Hare & Hounds at Fulbeck at 11.25 am and then at Leadenham (pick up point to be arranged).
The Raffle was won by Judy Peberdy. The Competition for a wooden ornament was won by Mary Siddans, 2nd Sue Deavin, 3rd Lorna Bavin. The Flower of the Month was won by Lorna Bavin, 2nd Ann Ashcroft, 3rd Linda Stevens.
Our January meeting will be a social event at which Deanna Hammond will tell us about the WI trip to Canada last month. Guests and visitors are most welcome to our meetings. We need the next generation of WI ‘movers and shakers’ from Caythorpe and surrounding villages to learn the ropes so that the organisation can move on and flourish, making new friends and campaigning for a better life for all.
We meet at Caythorpe Village Hall, every second Thursday in the month at 7.30 pm.
