Caythorpe & District  WI – September meeting

A colourful and lively evening was enjoyed when the Bourne Borderers Morris dancers descended on Caythorpe. With their multicoloured ‘ragged’ jackets, elaborate, feathered ‘poachers’ headgear and blacked up faces they made a dramatic entrance before demonstrating their traditional dances.  It was then our turn, and those who were sufficiently agile had to learn one of the dances and perform it. It was great fun. Mo Houvenaghel thanked the Bourne Morris dancers on our behalf and they joined us for a supper prepared by the committee.

President Sue Case said the summer trip to Cambridge had been a great success as was the Jazz Cruise on the River Trent. Linda Stevens and Linda Appleyard had taken up Lincolnshire Police’s invitation to the WI to practice on their skid pan. They thoroughly enjoyed it and are now prepared for the worst the next bad winter can throw at them!

The WI stall at the village gala raised £56.50, bringing our contribution to the new children’s play area to more than £500. Committee members were also busy on other stalls helping to raise further funds and serving refreshments.

As part of the WI’s SOS for Honeybees Campaign, Caythorpe WI has adopted a hive of 50,000 bees through a scheme run by the British Beekeepers Association.

The raffle was won by Margaret Sergeant. Flower of the month was won by Marylyn Mason, 2nd Linda Appleyard, 3rd Joan Coppin.  The competition for a seasonal ornament was won by Mavis Coxon, 2nd Marylyn Mason 3rd Joan Coppin.

The WI is a great campaigning organisation for the local and wider community. We are always anxious to invite the next generation of women into our midst so that we are aware of your concerns and interests.  We were all new, younger members once!  Ours is a voice that is listened to at Government level. When we raised the menace of plastic bags, the plight of honeybees, the inadequate and misleading labelling of food and the trafficking of women and children, action was taken almost immediately.

We meet every second Thursday in Caythorpe Village Hall at 7.30pm. Visitors, guests and potential new members from Caythorpe and the surrounding district are most welcome to join us.  Next month our speaker will be from the Grantham Hospice – an amalgamation of Gifts and St Barnabas hospices and members are asked to bring an item that can either be raffled on sold in aid of the new hospice.
